Frequently asked questions about restorative yoga.

What is Restorative Yoga?

Restorative yoga is a therapeutic gentle yoga practice that is often referred to as active or intentional relaxation. With the use of props such as blankets, bolsters, and blocks, restorative poses can be held anywhere from 5–20 minutes or longer. Time is essential in this practice. Restorative poses create good alignment to make space for the breath to flow freely. As you learn to let your body truly rest on the ground and be held up by your props, you make more room for the breath to flow through you.

What is “Hands-On Restorative”?

Hands-On Restorative Sessions are 60 minute sessions developed by Esther Bramlett, certified massage therapist and yoga instructor. They include traditional restorative poses combined with hands-on adjustments and massage techniques in order to enhance the calming effects on the parasympathetic nervous system.

What is the process like?

Please arrive 15 minutes prior to your appointment for intake. Wear comfortable clothing, and dress in layers as the body tends to cool down over the course of the session. During the session, you will be guided through 5-6 poses that are specifically customized to your needs and may utilize various props, blankets, hot stones, aromatherapy, guided meditation, breathing exercises, subtle hands-on adjustments and gentle massage techniques to bring the body into a state of relaxation and healing. Many people fall asleep during the session, which is completely normal and acceptable.

Do I have to be flexible?

No, there is no active engagement of your muscles during this session. However, you must be comfortable with getting down on the ground and getting up off the ground. This session is more about getting completely comfortable so you can let your body completely relax.

I've never participated in a guided meditation practice, is that required?

No, we don't have to talk or speak at all during the session aside from adjusting your body from one position to the next. Music is optional as well. This is a 60-minute session dedicated to what you need in order to tune into your body and allow yourself complete rest. The session will be designed for you specifically during the intake, so you will know exactly what is in store for you during the session.

Why are you offering this service?

Esther has been practicing yoga for fifteen years and practicing massage for nine. Offering a Hands-On restorative session has been a dream slowly unfolding into reality. She has participated in workshops that are similar to this idea of combining massage and yoga to intentionally relax and restore the body and found them to be extremely effective. Restorative yoga has multiple healing effects: aids in sleeping, eases anxiety, increases receptiveness, increases body awareness, and integrates your nervous system. This is just another service Esther offers as a part of her passion for enhancing ease and mobility in the body.  With our hectic lives, it is imperative to take time to slow down, get comfortable and intentionally breathe. It is a simple concept, but it is a powerful experience.
